Spindle Turning Fundamentals: Beads and Coves
The spindle is a conversation between a profile, a tool and the rhythm of the cut.

Read the profile
Mark the high points and valleys before cutting. A bead wants a controlled convex motion; a cove asks you to enter and leave without forcing the tool. The profile becomes easier to understand when it is drawn first.
Keep the tool moving

Translate a drawing into stations

Work within the supported area of the tool rest and keep the blank securely driven between centers. The drawing is a guide, not a promise. A bead is a convex transition that rewards a smooth arc; a cove asks the tool to enter, roll and leave without forcing the edge into the corner. Keep the handle moving with the cut and avoid stopping at the bottom of a cove. A skew can create a crisp surface but demands a controlled presentation and a clear escape path. If the surface tears, check grain direction, edge sharpness and support before changing the design. Face protection remains necessary because a spindle can still fail or eject.
Use repetition to find the error
Make three identical practice spindles and compare the reference marks, not just the final silhouette. Calipers show whether the diameter is consistent; a straightedge and raking light reveal dips; touch reveals a ridge the eye misses. Do not decorate a profile that is already drifting. For example, repeating one bead in maple teaches pressure and tool height more reliably than attempting a complex finial in expensive figured stock. The limitation is clear: practice improves control, but it does not make an unsafe mounting or dull edge acceptable.
Protect the reference marks
Use a sharp pencil, a story stick or calipers to preserve the relationship between stations as material comes away. If one diameter is lost, stop and redraw rather than blending the error into every adjoining bead. Keep the workpiece supported and take the smallest cut that reveals the next line. The best spindle practice combines hand movement with measurement. It also leaves enough material to recover from a mistake. A complex profile is only successful when its transitions remain crisp after finishing and its mounting remains sound throughout.
