How Do You Choose Acacia Deck Boards by Thickness and Grade?
Thickness decides the span. A 25 mm board is a light deck surface for foot traffic on joists at 300 to 400 mm. A 30 mm board tolerates joists at 400 to 500 mm and feels stiffer underfoot. Boards of 35 mm and up are for public walkways, vehicle edges, or decks where the framing cannot be tightened.
Grade is about what the saw left behind. Clear grade shows few knots and straight grain. Standard grade allows knots, sapwood edges, and small checks. Neither grade is stronger in service, but clear grade moves less and takes a cleaner finish. For a deck that will gray naturally, standard grade is often the practical choice.
Width matters as much as thickness. A 120 to 140 mm face is common. Wider boards cup more across the face, so they need thicker stock or closer joists. Narrow boards cost more per square meter in labour but stay flatter.
Check moisture before laying. Acacia dries slowly and a board that arrives wet will shrink at the joints. Stack boards in the shade, sticker them, and let them settle for a week or two on site.
What Is the Correct Joist Spacing for an Acacia Deck?
Joist spacing follows board thickness, not species pride. Use 400 mm centres for 25 to 30 mm boards, 500 mm for 30 to 35 mm boards, and 600 mm only for heavy stock intended for low traffic. These figures assume the board runs across the joists, which is the normal layout.
Direction changes the rule. When a board runs along a joist, as on a border or a picture frame, add a joist under every board end and at every joint. A board end that hangs in air will cup and split.
Gaps between boards should be 4 to 6 mm. Acacia swells in wet weather and shrinks in dry heat. A tight deck in spring becomes a cracked deck in August. A gap that looks wide in winter closes by summer.
Fixings matter. Stainless steel screws or hidden clips suit acacia because the wood is acidic enough to attack plain steel over time. Pre-drill near board ends. Acacia splits if a screw is driven without a pilot hole, especially in cold weather.
Ventilation under the deck is part of the spacing question. Leave at least 150 mm of clear air below the joists and keep the ground under the deck free of leaves. A deck that cannot dry from below will fail from the top.
What Is a Ventilated Facade and Why Does Acacia Need One?
A ventilated facade is a cladding fixed to battens, with a drained and ventilated cavity behind it. The cladding sheds most rain. What gets past it runs down the back face and out at the base. Air moving through the cavity carries moisture away.
Acacia needs this cavity because it is a dense, dimensionally active wood. Fixed tight against a wall, a board cannot dry on its back face. Trapped moisture and no airflow create the conditions for surface mould and, in time, decay at the fixing points.
The build is simple. A drained membrane goes on the wall. Vertical or horizontal battens create a cavity of 25 to 40 mm. The acacia cladding is fixed to the battens with stainless screws, leaving a 5 to 8 mm gap between boards. An insect mesh closes the top and bottom openings.
Orientation decides the batten direction. Horizontal cladding needs vertical battens for drainage. Vertical cladding can use horizontal battens, but then the cavity must be cross vented at the top and bottom of each bay.
Acacia cladding is usually left to weather. It turns from yellow brown to silver gray over two to three seasons. That colour change is surface only. The wood below stays sound if the cavity works.
Does Acacia Need a Finish Outdoors?
No finish is required for the wood to last. Acacia grays and stays structurally sound. A finish is a choice about colour and surface, not about survival.
If a deck or facade should keep its brown tone, use a pigmented oil designed for exterior hardwood. Apply it to dry wood, thin coats, and repeat when water stops beading. Film finishes such as varnish fail on acacia because the wood moves and the film cracks.
Cleaning is the more useful habit. A soft brush and water remove pollen and dust. A deck cleaner with oxalic acid lifts gray and iron stains. Avoid pressure washing at close range, which raises the grain and opens the surface.
How Does Acacia Compare With Imported Decking Woods?
Acacia sits between European softwoods and tropical hardwoods. It is harder than larch or pine and comparable to teak in outdoor service, though teak is more stable. Ipe and cumaru are denser and heavier, and they cost more in money and transport.
The European debate about acacia as an invasive species is real. Robinia pseudoacacia spreads by root suckers and seed, and some countries restrict planting. That debate concerns forests and field edges, not the use of harvested timber in a deck. A board on a joist does not spread.
For a buyer in Central Europe, acacia has one clear advantage over tropical decking: it grows close to the market. Transport distance is short, and the wood is available in local sawmills.
What Else Belongs in an Acacia Outdoor Build?
A deck rarely stands alone. The same wood suits fences, privacy screens, garden benches, and sun loungers. The rules carry over: ventilate the back face, gap the boards, and use stainless fixings.
Stairs and railings need the same care as the deck surface. A stair tread is a board with a load, so use 35 mm stock and joist spacing of 300 mm. Railing posts should be bolted through the framing, not fixed to the deck boards.
For facades, plan the openings first. Windows, vents, and doors interrupt the batten grid, and each interruption needs its own flashing. Water that reaches a window head must be directed out, not into the cavity.
Acacia rewards a builder who thinks about water. Let it drain, let it dry, and it will outlast the fixings that hold it.
